Workday announced new autonomous AI agents designed to initiate and execute tasks across finance and HR workflows, marking a shift from responsive assistants to proactive autopilots. The company unveiled these tools on Tuesday, emphasizing customer-defined controls over actions taken automatically or requiring human review.
The autopilot agents will operate in the background to handle processes such as hiring, payroll, accounting and other business functions. According to Joel Hellermark, Workday’s chief AI officer, traditional AI has functioned as a copilot, useful when prompted, but modern enterprise needs demand agents that complete work independently and engage people only when human judgment is essential.
The announcement included the Trusted Agent Platform, which allows customers to build custom agents using preferred AI models. This platform maintains enterprise permissions and audit trails. Additionally, Workday introduced Decision Intelligence, a tool enabling HR and finance teams to model workforce scenarios and evaluate financial outcomes.
The rollouts address rising concerns about unpredictable AI behavior, as some industry leaders advocate for a development slowdown. During an October 8 virtual press conference, Gerrit Kazmaier, president of product and technology, acknowledged public scrutiny and stressed that enterprise AI must be reliable, secure and lawful. CEO Aneel Bhusri similarly emphasized that the company’s tools operate within defined guardrails.

Workday’s payroll agent flags missing data or potential issues before payroll processing. The accounting agent extracts contract details, prepares journal entries, recommends revenue recognition and billing schedules, and tests transactions for risks. The talent acquisition agent monitors open roles, identifies positions at risk of unmet hiring goals and locates qualified candidates, with capabilities to draft outreach messages and coordinate interviews.
The talent acquisition agent is available to early adopters, with general release scheduled for early 2027. The payroll and accounting agents will follow a similar timeline. Customers determine which actions proceed automatically, which undergo review, and when humans must decide, the company stated. Activity logs support cost management as usage scales.
“Probabilistic AI is great at guessing, but in payroll and finance a good guess isn’t good enough,” Kazmaier said in the release.
