Jet Fuel Crisis Hits Travelers: Major US Carriers Hike Checked Bag Fees $10 Amid Surge in Prices

In a move to offset the increasing cost of jet fuel, two of America’s largest airlines have announced a hike in checked bag fees. Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines will now charge passengers $10 more per bag, joining United Airlines and JetBlue Airways in implementing similar price adjustments.

Southwest Airlines Takes the Lead

Southwest Airlines has led the way by increasing its fees on first and second checked bags by $10, effective for all reservations ticketed or voluntarily changed on or after April 9, 2026. This change brings the fee to check a first piece of luggage to $45, with a second bag costing $55.

Delta Air Lines Follows Suit

Delta Air Lines has also implemented similar changes, increasing its checked bag fees for domestic flights and shorter international trips. The new prices will take effect with bookings starting Wednesday, with the airline stating that these updates are part of its ongoing review of pricing across its business.

Airlines Grapple with Rising Jet Fuel Costs

  • Jet fuel in major U.S. cities was priced at $4.69 a gallon on Monday, according to Airlines for America, citing Argus data – an increase of nearly 88% since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28.
  • The key Strait of Hormuz shipping channel has remained effectively closed over the past month, choking off global crude and refined fuel supplies.

As airlines continue to navigate these challenging market conditions, investors will be keenly interested in Delta’s first-quarter results, set to be released on Wednesday. Analysts have pointed to strong demand as a potential salve for high fuel costs, but it remains unclear whether carriers can fully cover the surge in fuel prices.

The Impact of Rising Fuel Costs

Rising jet fuel costs are a major expense for airlines, after labor. In an effort to mitigate these increased costs, carriers have turned to alternative revenue streams, such as checked bag fees. As the industry continues to adapt to changing market conditions, passengers can expect to see more price adjustments in the months ahead.
